The mini curriculum presented in this session will help students develop a greater understanding of style and put them in the drivers seat to make their own arrangements. Participants will complete assignments in whole-class and small-group settings to identify and outline qualities of the musical elements that define various styles including pop, jazz, reggae, rock, techno, and folk. Participants will then create arrangements of John Legend’s “All of Me” in different styles than the original.
Using the lesson ideas presented, students will be able to solve the overarching musical problem “How does one arrange and/or write music within a particular style?” while developing their playing abilities as individuals and within an ensemble setting. Through these lessons both teacher and learner will experience the social constructivist model of teaching and learning through listening, creating, and performing. Come learn about learner agency, learner choice, and creative assessment while creating your own stylistic arrangements!
