Afro-Latin rhythms are part of the foundation for rock rhythms. This workshop will demonstrate how you can teach Afro-Latin rhythms using Modern Band concepts to give your ensemble a strong rhythmic foundation as well as a means for exploring and drawing connections between different cultures. Afro-Latin rhythms lend themselves well to ensembles that include students with a wide range of skills because the parts that students play can be differentiated and scaffolded, presenting opportunities for peer coaching. I will teach applications for rhythms from salsa, bossa nova, samba, and 6/8 Bembe. Session participants will gain a variety of tools for practicing these rhythms and planning lessons for ensembles playing various kinds of rock, pop, Latin or jazz music on various instruments. Participants will also learn how to orchestrate these rhythms for a percussion section and draw rhythmic inspiration for comping and soloing on chordal and melodic instruments.
