This session will explore alternate forms of percussion to drum set including bucket drumming, shakers, cajons, and djembes. The bucket drumming portion of the session will cover why to teach bucket drumming, practical ideas and routines for doing so, and a number of group activities to do with bucket drums. A portion of the session will be devoted to exploring other percussion instruments so teachers leave feeling confident in some of the typical ways these instruments are played and used. Knowing that many teachers already do bucket drumming in their classrooms, time will be allocated for attendees to volunteer to share any of the activities they use in their classroom so everyone leaves with even more resources.

In addition, teachers will be show the merits of bucket drumming through the lens of adapting lessons back to the standard drum kit. Time will be taken after the bucket drumming section to transform the buckets into “”mini kits,” consisting of two buckets a piece. Attendees will then rotate on and off of the bucket kits, taught the basic back beat, and given the opportunity to solo over other guests in the circle.

Lastly, A section on triplets in the context of drum fills and improvisation will round out the session. Teachers will be prompted with examples of triplet fills in order to add more color, and expression into their playing. A presentation on the “Triplet Chart” will be given in order to give students and teachers alike the access to attempting triplet fills. Improvisation will be pushed heavily; teachers will be encouraged to come up with their own fills using the chart for iconic representation of their own creation.
