In this workshop, you will learn an innovative way of teaching guitar to beginner
students. A big focus of this method is a form of guitar pedagogy developed by John Henry
Sheridan, called Single String Tablature. This is what I use for my first unit of starting students
on guitar. If you have ever taught chords to students, you are familiar with some of the common
struggles (fret buzzing, difficulty identifying strings and frets, confusing string numbers for fret
numbers, lack of developed rhythm, and many more hardships for the beginner guitarist).
Teaching Single String Tablature for the first crucial 6 weeks of the beginner guitarist's journey
drastically improves the aforementioned struggles. By the time students start chords, they have a
great understanding of the mechanics of the instrument. So what is Single String Tablature? It is
a series of warm-ups, drills, vocabulary, and most importantly, a vast repertoire of single string
melodies, represented on a one-line tab staff. Most of the repertoire consists of original
compositions by John Henry Sheridan, containing lyrics and embedded guitar concepts. In the
workshop, I will share much of this repertoire, and some of the formulaic methods for teaching
these pieces. This includes teaching by rote by having students learn to chant the lyrics, slowly
replacing the lyrics with fret numbers, and finally applying the fret chant to any string of the
guitar. This creates great concert repertoire, while preparing students to awesomely learn
