When we hear a song we love, our minds are flooded with information. Our musical brains go to work plucking out a chord progression and our emotional selves search of some meaning in the lyrics. But any song with a place in our lives also comes with context. In this session, we will explore how the popular music we love can lead to rich, engaging classroom activities across the disciplines. Using multimedia from collaborations with PBS Soundbreaking, Dave Grohl’s Sonic Highways HBO series, Ron Howard’s The Beatles: Eight Days A Week documentary, and Jack White and T-Bone Burnett’s American Epic, we will consider the educational value and classroom impact of contextualizing music within time and place.
